Pre - Production: MY ROLES + INSPIRATION.

For our final year at University, our first project is the pre-production unit. For this unit I have chosen to undertake the 'Major project' idea. In a group we will be creating a pre production package that will form and help us film our Major project next year.

I have decided to work in a group with Vic Falcucci and we have discussed each possible role and which we would like to take. I am going to be the PRODUCER and SCREENWRITER and Vic is going to be the DIRECTOR and EDITOR.

For our actual project idea, Vic and I both initially wanted to create a Drama short film. However, we was unsure on what sort of story, style and (possibly) sub genre we would like to create.

I have been really interested in mystery dramas and decided to look more into the genre.

MYSTERY:
''Mystery fiction is a genre of fiction usually involving a mysterious death or a crime to be solved. In a closed circle of suspects, each suspect must have a credible motive and a reasonable opportunity for committing the crime''

Mystery fiction may also have some supernatural elements to it which amplify and dramatise the scenario more, making the mystery less logical but more entertaining for the viewers.

Some examples of mystery films include;
Seven (1995)
Memento (2000)
Inception (2010)
Black Swan (2010)

All the films entice the audience by dropping hints and new ideas throughout the films, making sure the audience are always being shocked and taking in new information to entice them into watching more and wanting to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Even 'Inception' until the very it leaves the audience hanging on whether everything was all a dream - usually, these sort of endings can be very boring and 'typical' however, it was written and directed so thoughtfully that the ending was very controversial to the audience and got them wanting to know more.

Seven and Black Swan also carry the 'Psychological thriller' genre with them as they also heavily feature unstable emotional states of characters.

DRAMA:
''Drama film is a genre that relies on the emotional and relational development of realistic characters. Dramatic themes play a large role in the plot swell, often these dramatic themes are taken from intense, real life issues''

Drama films are especially inviting to watch as a lot of the time the scenes are emphasised and exaggerated for entertainment, whilst still holding the realism behind it.

Some examples of Drama films are:
Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Titanic (1997)
Everest (2015)

All these films hold realism in the foundations of the story, such as a man in prison, two people falling in love, and people who pursue to push their limits. Titanic and Everest are also based on real stories, however they all add elements of drama and enigma in them to keep the audience enticed.

I really like the idea of putting the two genres together to create a Mystery Drama. Vic and I discussed how we could use elements of both genres, so we could use real life situations but also use the element of mystery to dramatise it.

In the book ''Film Genre for the Screenwriter'' by Julie Sellbo, she discusses the different type of mysteries that can occur in film/television.

''In the classic mystery, the audience is given clues: where, why, who, how and when''
The first is the idea that the audience at first are given some clues to begin with so they immediately know what's going on and in some cases, why. An example of this could be in Agatha Christie's Poirot. The series often begins with a case which clues are given and sometimes the murderer is even shown. The audience then follow the story and are often shown clues before Poirot himself is.

''In some cases, the story is constructed to be a ''closed'' story - the audience ''solves'' the mstery as the protagonist does'' (Sellbo, 2014)
The second idea is much more appealing to me, I like the idea that the audience are following the story along with the characters, I think it builds much more tension and enigma and we as an audience can be shocked just like the characters are. A great example of this is the television series Pretty Little Liars, where a group of girls are being stalked and over the years put together the pieces, but still in the end the stalker is completely different to who we all thought it was.
